Let's get started on a new project. The Create a Country project will mainly focus on your knowledge of geography. It will act as review for the concepts of government and economy as well. The mini-project is due next Friday, October 23rd. Check the assignment downloads at the bottom of this post!

Blogs 1-10 are due on Thursday as well as your narrative pyramid, your sample peer-review, and your narrative PQP peer-review form.
Due to some time constraints in our curriculum, I am going to augment the original blog project. You are no longer required to weave a story throughout the whole blog. I will work with each of you on your blog paragraphs and show you how to tighten up each of your paragraphs. I want each one of you to be successful, and I am nervous that if we switched gears as a class into narrative building that I may lose too many of you. That being said, some of you are already ready to go for this option. I will teach the class how to do it, but for those that are behind you will only be required to make your blog paragraphs focused and cohesive, and to construct a narrative pyramid that you would have used to write a story if you had more time. In other words, think of it as a challenge. What particular made-up personality could use all the vocabulary that we have covered so far this year?
Today we will begin discussing the importance of editing another's work. How do you edit someone else's work? How do you provide substantial feedback without making the author feel like they did a poor job? How can this strategy benefit this class? Is this a lifelong goal?
We will discuss the benefits of this strategy as well as how to implement it this week. Since my favorite part of teaching is teaching writing, I am extremely excited to show you how important this strategy can be in the future. Supply is an economic concept that connects to the number of an item and demand concerns a consumer’s interest. Supply is directly linked to demand in that they influence one another. If you have a high demand, then the supply will be low and expensive. If you have a large supply, and the demand is low the item will be cheap or become really cheap. An example of demand would be people lining up to buy the new iPhone 6s. In this example, supply may not meet demand and the item’s price could rise. Supply and demand are constantly in flux, but will always have a large effect on one another.
Topic Sentence: Supply is an economic concept that connects to the number of an item and demand concerns a consumer’s interest. Supply is directly linked to demand in that they influence one another. ________ influences _______ by _____________. The effect __________ has on __________ is __________. The following files will help you fill out your project. I have listed the options that we talked about in class. Follow the guidelines to receive an A. Use the Bookmark Tool for every mini-project. Remember you are only required to choose one mini-project. Good luck and have fun!
Starting this week each of you will begin reading a book of your choice at home. My hope is that you pick a book that is both challenging and exciting to read. You will be required to read around seventy pages a week. Please pick a book that is at your level. I do not want to have students who are severely struggling to understand the vocabulary in their books. It should be filled with words that you recognize 85% of the time. I want you to enjoy the time you spend with the book, so that you can fulfill the mini-project that will accompany the end of your book report.
In class, I will show you a slew of options that will replace the old style of writing a few paragraphs about your book. Once I have an idea of which mini-project options are the most popular, I will post the rubrics for each mini-project to the blog. You may still write an expository essay about your book if you wish to do so. Here are some of the options: Book in a Box, Mobile Book Project, Book Timeline, Shoebox Diorama, Collage Book Project, Movie Poster, Graphic Chapter Book Project, Board Game, Create a Test Book Project, and still more options that will be revealed in class. I was not happy with the results of the last quiz. I will return them to you on Monday. While you definitely should have taken notes and studied more throughout the week, I think the test was too hard for this early in the year.
I will make you a deal. Using our compare and contrast language in our notebooks/Google Docs, you must compare and contrast two words from each section that you missed. Some of you may have to write three to four paragraphs (or cover six to eight words), but some of you will only need to write a paragraph or two. This will also count towards your blog project. In short, you will review the material and have more material to add to your group blogs. REMINDER this is how you construct a compare/contrast paragraph (the bolded words are being compared/contrasted). Topic sentence: Civic life is an activity that connects to an individual's society and community whereas an interest group attempts to influence public policy. ________ is similar to _______ by _____________. Yet __________ is unlike __________ regarding __________. Since this is my first year teaching just sixth grade, there will inevitably be some growing pains but it is my hope that the compromises that I come up with or both academically beneficial and fair. I am looking forward to some review and a great week next week. |
